    Crumbs from my jar....

I didn't get much response on my request for reproduction information last month and I am not giving up! I know that this list is a wonderful resource and I want to make sure to get your expertise. In the past month I've heard of three separate people/groups who have been in contact with eBay trying to get the issue of fakes and reproductions addressed. I hope to have more information on the web site soon.

IF you've been "taken", if you see a reproduction that is not advertised as such, if you've bought a reproduction and would be willing to share a picture of it, please let me know.

There are still people bidding on fakes, "McCoy" Little Red Riding Hoods, and "old" jars found in the estate attic. And many times these are going for high prices because of what I believe to be shill bidding. I've been to eBay headquarters twice for a Collectibles Summit (both times at their expense!) and have talked myself blue about this topic. They don't believe it's a problem, but I think there has been enough outcry lately that it just might be making a dent. I hope so. My biggest personal gripe is Private Feedback, if we can get rid of that, it will be a start in unmasking those folks who are guilty of selling this junk.

I also write a weekly newsletter on the Collectibles.About.com web site and, of course, will mention jar news now and then. Many times before I get this newsletter done. If you would like to subscribe to the Collectibles newsletter, it's sent every Wednesday. The newsletter submission link is right next to my picture on the top of the page. Collectibles.about.com

And of course another newsletter you can get is from the American Cookie Jar Club, written by Beverly Sutton. How do you get that one? You join the club for a paltry $10. a year. Just a reminder, if you don't get one on March 1st, that means you've probably not re-newed.

    until next time,
    ~barbara

    Schwan's Jar Shows Up
It's a nice lookig jar, a little smaller than I pictured, but still a good size. I like the way the side mirrors were done, looked very realistic.

    Black Memorabilia Show
I got a note from Roger L. about the Black Memorabilia & Collectible Show in the Washington, DC area. Date is Saturday, April 16, 2005 from 10 AM- 7 PM. Location is the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg, Maryland. For more information check the www.johnsonshows.com web site.

    Peach Cobbler Murder Mystery
I'll be honest, the reason I bought the first Hannah Swensen mystery book was because of a cookie jar on the cover. Yes, I'm really an avid collector of cookie jars. But after reading the book and realizing how much Joanne Fluke's books appeal to collectors, I've been pleased to tell you about them. And if you go to one of her book signings, there is always a collectible cookie jar filled with cookies on her table!

    Top Ten in Pottery/Glass Category
Although I don't think I've ever seen a cookie jar in this monthly list, the buyer search terms can be very enlightening. No wonder so many sellers list McCoy in their auctions -- its one of the top search terms. eBay Top Tens in Pottery

    Are You a Collecting Family?
There is a new TV show on the horizon and the producers are looking for Collecting Families. There must be at least one child in the family between the age of six and eighteen. Interested? More Info
    Lady w/Red Hat
Merla gave the alert on this jar. If you know a Red Hat Lady, I'm sure they would love this jar. Made by Certified International, the jar is gorgeous with a sweeping red hat. I'm hoping to get a picture of this up soon. Merla found this jar at Hobby Lobby, but I am sure it can be found in many places. The good thing about finding the jar at Hobby Lobby is that they periodically have all their ceramics on sale for 50% off. This jar was $59. (I believe), so that half price sale will be welcome!
    Hobby Lobby Easter Jars
Speaking of Hobby Lobby sale jars, this week the Easter Tabletop is on sale! I saw three jars the last time I was in the store. A large Easter egg that sort of was laying on it's side, with lots of flowers. They also had an Easter car jar, with Easter bunnies driving and a small Spring crock jar.
    Target Tropicals
If you have a Target nearby, be sure to check out their Summer picnic area. There are three new jars and each one is better than the other. A pineapple jar with a retro look, a Pink Flamingo and a Carmen Miranda style jar. The Carmen (my name for it) is fantastic, very well done, lots of detail, nice painting and fairly large at approximately 12" high. Best of all -- it's $14.99. The Flamingo is also $14.99 and the pineapple is a paltry $12.99.

    Fitz & Floyd Re-Issues
The latest Fitz & Floyd catalog had quite a surprise -- I got a peek at it while shopping at a local gift store. It looks like they are re-issuing three of their popular Christmas jars from the eighties. I do not know if the jars are exact replicas or even how they are marked. If I remember correctly the three jars are the Christmas Car, Spirit of St. Nicholas Airplane jar and Santa Cycle jar. Again, I do not know if the names are the same or if the jar is an exact replica. The pictures looked pretty good and the retail price was $100 for two of them and $150. for the third one. Hopefully I'll have more information up soon.
