Crumbs from my jar....

Crumbs from my jar,

Welcome to our three new subscribers this week! You can read this complete newsletter, as well as past newsletter issues on the Newsletter Archive on The Cookie Jar Net.

I know, you don't hear from me for weeks and now two newsletters in less than a week. But instead of waiting, I wanted to get this information out in plenty of time for you to use it. Thanks for the tips and pictures I've gotten since the last newsletter. I have lots of pictures from the Boleys which will be used in the next month or so and new jar tips from Merla and Candice.

I just got back from a few days spent with eBay folks in San Jose with good news and bad news. You can read my report below.

I've also heard that cookie jar collector Pat Green and her family lost everything because of Katrina. I am hoping to talk with her later this week and see what I can find out and report back.

All right, let's get to the news and reports.

until next time,
~barb

eBAY 10% OFF

Imagine my surprise. I just returned from intensive meetings at eBay and not one word was mentioned about the promotion I found in today's Sunday paper. In case you missed it, eBay is offering 10% off a single purchase that is made using Paypal. Read the details on the Collectibles web site:

TARGET JACK O'LANTERN

A terrific jar, it's well made, has a bit of an attitude and it's also inexpensive.
Target Jack O'Lantern

Merla also reported she found a Turkey cookie jar at the Target near her home. No turkeys in Oklahoma City yet, at least not the gobble-gobble kind.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love Target? Lots of great Halloween goodies -- fun stuff to decorate with and also very classy looking table-top items with the Halloween theme.

SPOOKY HOUSE

Candice found a spooky house jar online, also a bit different and fun looking. The link to this jar is on the blog on the front page of the web site:

I was a bit disappointed that I didn't have a chance to pin down eBay people more on the reproduction issue. I almost went ballistic when the head of Security and Safety said that someone called him directly about the Milk Bottle reproduction problem and they were able to set up system where the Milk Bottle Collectors Association (not sure of their exact name) is now on board to help them patrol the auctions. If this is the case, I asked, why haven't we been able to do anything with the pottery areas. I reminded him this was brought up and I actually got into a heated disagreement two years ago at this same summit about the issue. And then I said that it was brought up again last year and nothing has been done.

Personally I believe the problem is, as pottery/cookie jar enthusiasts, we do not present a united front. They will not listen to individual sellers or buyers complaining about individual listings. It's just not gonna happen. I was also told that the category manager has been in touch with some groups and has received mixed messages. Some clubs and associations are apparently interested in helping and others don't want anything to do with it.

Bottom line -- until we can present a strong united front, we are not going to get results. I don't think eBay is going to mess around with a half dozen different pottery groups, we need to come up with one source for them to go to. (This is, of course, my take on it)

My suggestion is we get the various associations to meet over the Internet and explore how we can go to eBay as a single group willing to work with patrolling the auctions and answering specific questions eBay might have. If we had a group that consisted of people from e.g. Abingdon, Roseville, Hull, McCoy -- the appropriate group would be the one to answer eBay queries and questions about specific jars and pottery. If you belong to a pottery group or association and can speak with your members and officers, please do so. I am not interested in heading this project up, but I am willing to do whatever I can to get the ball rolling. If your group\ can help or you are interested in helping this project work, please email me and we can figure out what step to take next.

I do believe we can make it happen, it's just going to take a little work. Let me hear from you and if I get responses I'll set up a mailing list so that everyone can talk to each other and figure out steps we should take.
