THE REAL MCCOY: Is it authentic or is it a fake? McCoy and Cookie Jars go together and because they do, many unscrupulous sellers try to take advantage of collectors. This is especially prevalent through Internet sales when buyers think they are bidding or purchasing an authentic jar from the real McCoy company. When should the bells go off? The Real McCoy

Put the words cookie jar in the search box and 47 jars should pop up. Trademark Collection

ONLINE AUCTION RANTS
suspended seller. . . I received several emails on Friday that one particular seller was finally suspended from eBay. There have been several people sending letters and filing complaints about "passions4u" for months now. It's hard to figure out what took them (eBay) so long to finally act.

But apparently we haven't heard the last from this seller -- a new seller popped up this past week and, what a coincidence, the text in the description is almost identical. And, yes, this new seller has similar merchandise. Unfortunately, the new name is very similar to a a well known cookie jar dealer. So BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!

more. . . There was a recent article in the Wall Street Journal about another seller, Stewart Richardson, on eBay that really makes me wonder -- who can you trust? Apparently this seller had over 6000 feedbacks with 58 negatives. He had been doing business for years, when all of a sudden with over 200,000 worth of sales in January -- he collected the money and disappeared!

From the Wall Street Journal: "He scheduled bidding on the collectible auctions to end Jan. 4 and instructed successful bidders to send their payment to him promptly. "This is a large estate auction!" read the description on the eBay site for one of the figurines, a mint-condition 1978 Chief Nip-a-Way from Wee Forest Folk, a mouse dressed up as an American Indian. "It is very important that we receive your payment within seven days of auction end," the posting declared. The winning bid on Chief Nip-a-Way: $1,035. The buyer says the figurine was never delivered."

alternatives?. . .
What are the alternatives? Any suggestions or thoughts? Many times I have people emailing me about jars they want to sell. It's getting harder to give them an answer about the best way to do it. At one time I had a very successful list of classifieds running here, but it took too much time to keep up with it. Should I start it up again?

until next time,
bc
