Crumbs from my jar....

Many people asked for my eBay ID after I mentioned that I'll be putting stuff on eBay -- I'll be letting them know when I get closer to doing a bunch of listings. But for right now I am trying to figure out if I want to do it regular eBay, eBay store format, using a mall presence such as TIAS or just putting a list on my own web site. What's your preferred method of selling?

If you're going to the cookie jar auction this weekend and can share results, please email them to me. The Boley's took some notes at last week's auction which was greatly appreciated.

A Cookie Jar Contest for the month of May -- answer of the questions (below) or respond to any of my requests and you'll be automatically entered. Choice of prizes will be online later this month. Everyone who answered the Most Expensive Jar question last month was also added. The only requirement is that all answers must go to my email address: Cookiejarcollector@gmail.com You can answer more than one question for multiple entries.

Bonus Question: In 1999 a jar sold for $9000. What was it and who made it? REMEMBER you must answer to the above email address!

Until next time,
~barb

SHOULD IT BE BUYER BEWARE?
According to a poll done in April, reproductions have infiltrated most fields of collecting, not just cookie jars. Very sad but true. And many feel that more should be done to police the collectibles world, but at some point buyers have to take responsiblity for their actions.

NOT that it does much good, but each year when I attend the eBay Summit for Collectibles, I hammer home the fact that they need to do more. I get many comments (from different sources) that it should be Buyer Beware. So it's time to take another poll about this subject. Believe me the folks from eBay read my Collectibles web site on a regular basis. In fact sometimes I'm surprised I get invited back to the summit each year.

AOL USER?
Even though I don't use AOL's regular service, I am addicted to AOL Instant Messenger (XmasCookE). It's a way to keep in touch with family and friends all day long. Hopefully I don't abuse it too much with my kids, but as a Mom, that's my job. And every once in a while I will talk to jar collectors online when I have a quick question. If you're a user of AOL Instant Message, what does your icon say about you? How about a cookie jar related one? I have several jar images that are just the right size, along with instructions on how to add them.

WHAT DO YOU KEEP IN YOUR JARS?

Further down the newsletter is a link to an article about using Lunchboxes for different things. What about cookie jars? Do you have a different use for a cookie jar? Or something unusual you might keep in them? I keep State Quarters in a purse cookie jar, flower arrangements in lid-less jars, flour/sugar/tea in various jars in the kitchen, but the most unusual thing is a jar I use as a final resting place for my beloved dog that passed away last year. The jar is an artist-made, one-of-a-kind jar that wound up costing quite a bit, but it's perfect for the use. Maybe one day I'll even share pictures of it, but the loss still hurts a year later. So tell me about unusual items for your cookie jars.

MOTHER'S DAY FLOWERS
A gorgeous looking cookie jar is on the Fitz and Floyd web site. It's a white basket of spring flowers that has an old world porcelain look, at least it does in the pictures! This would be a great alternative to those times when flowers are called for, but you want to give something a little different.

DUMBO JARS
Pictures of the new limited edition Dumbo jar from the Disney Store (not auction) are now online. And thanks to Nancy Allen for her pictures of the old 1940s jar next to the 2006 jar. If you've already checked the jar on Disney, you'll notice that they don't show both sides, so some folks did not realize it was a turn-about jar. Nancy took pictures of both sides of the jars side by side.

I've also added a few pictures of other Disney Dumbo jars -- I'm missing a few pictures of jars. IF you have the California Original Dumbo (in colors, not Antique finish) I would love to get a picture of it.

KASTING AUCTION RESULTS
Thanks to John and Debbie Boley for compiling results from the auction in April. There is another auction coming up this weekend, if you're going and can send some of the note-worthy results, it would be appreciated.

MOST EXPENSIVE JARS
It was a fun subject but the best answer was from Carol Ann Eichelmann -- it was a mouse jar for $5. Now, before you wonder how that can be? Read the story and it all becomes clear.

METLOX
This month's spotlight is on Metlox Cookie Jar prices on eBay.

JOHNSTON AUCTION
I was in touch with folks about the auction to be held with Randy Inman -- no date has been set, but the last I heard, they were looking at September/October. This just might be one I want to attend, but a date needs to be set in plenty of time to make arrangements. I'll keep you posted on anything I hear.

FRAPPR
We're up to 49 collectors on FRAPPR -- why not take a few moments and add your location!

KELLOGG'S JARS
Nancy got her Kellogg's cookie jar from Barron's this past week and loves it. She said the jar was pretty big, but most of all she loved all the different Kellogg characters on it. Ordering information was in the February newsletter.

Speaking of Kellogg's -- I saw another Kellogg's jar on eBay, after the auction closed. My kitchen is red and white, I do have some simple white on white chicken tiles on my backsplash AND it's where I keep my advertising jars. So if any jar would be at home in our kitchen, it's this one. Unfortunately I've not been able to find out where to get one. The seller did not have any more. If you have a clue -- fill me in.

STATE QUARTERS
The State Quarter program has been going on since 1999 and the number of collectors keep growing. I keep my State Quarters in a purse cookie jar! What about you -- do you collect them?

FOUR USES FOR LUNCHBOXES, BESIDES LUNCH
Sure you can stick your stuff on a shelf or in a display cabinet, but I've always loved to use my stuff as much as possible in everyday life. Here are four lunchboxes that we use on a regular basis.
